Weights of Different Papers

Confused about paper weights? No wonder, it's a truly bizarre system. The stated weight in pounds is based on 500 sheets of the basis size paper; and that basis size is different for different types of paper (e.g., bond vs. cover). So, "28 lb." Bond is actually a much heavier paper than "28 lb." Index. If you want to compare apples to apples, use the grams per square meter (gsm) rating instead. Or, you can look at the chart below. Notice, for example, that 24 lb. Bond is the same actual weight as 60 lb. Offset (90.3 gsm)! That's because the basis size for offset is so much larger than bond. Who came up with this system?
